A lonely writer develops an unlikely relationship with his newly purchased operating system that's designed to meet his every need.
"Her". Looking for intimacy in all the wrong places. Imagine if Siri, the iPhone voice, were enhanced so she could actually think. She flirts with you, tells you she loves you, tells you how special you are. She has everything but a physical form. (But with Scarlett Johansson's cooing voice, she's quite fetching.)
Joaquin Phoenix takes us down a path being trod by many young people looking for something but not getting it. More texting, more sexting, more Facebook friends. And still ... emptiness.
Here we see Theodore grappling with real life, real relationships, real women and instead retreating back to his cyberlover. And when the infamous "they" abruptly discontinue the new operating system (Os 1), Theodore and his would-be, kinda, sorta girlfriend (Amy Adams) are jolted into reality.
Or what passes for reality. It elicits the question "What is reality?" Emotion? It's there. Intimacy? Yeah, everything except the touching.
A couple of female roles were disappointing by their brevity. Rooney Mara and the marvelous Olivia Wilde (recognizable as 13 in "House") were hardly more than background actors.
